These sea paintings come out of the memories I have from sailing on and off for thirty years. My wife Margy and I sailed a boat from the east coast of the UK to Kusadasi in Turkey, a discontinuous trip made over a period of several years, we also made numerous trips around the UK coast and across to France and the Netherlands. The many hours spent standing at the helm looking at calm waters and still skies as well as dramatically strong winds and menacing waves has been etched on my psyche. A number of these paintings capture the last few hours of a sailing trip, when the navigation will take the vessel close to a headland, before turning towards a safe harbour. It is this situation of sailing round a headland, where the waves kick up, the wind changes direction, the current becomes confused, there maybe changes to the depth of the sea at these places, rocks to avoid that adds a feeling of danger. Other Painting are about the memories of being out of sight of land sailing overnight with gale force winds, leaving a harbour, or crossing the English Channel in dense fog with no radar. This series of paintings has also been inspired by the works of great sea painters, J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, Andreas Achenbach and Willem van de Velde the Younger. Each painting is about a particular place:- The Cliffs at Tropea - Calabria, The Raz de Sein - Brittany, San Vito Lo Capo - Sicily, they are places that remind me of a particular event, a thunderstorm, the boat engine not starting, close encounters with large ships at night, a fore sail getting tangled whilst arriving in harbour or a fast sail with a good wind.
A painting commission.

The Sea- Most of the planet is covered by the sea, I have painted and drawn it for 50 years. What does this mean in the 21st Century? For me it is about being outside in all weather’s and seasons, trying to relate to the confusion of space, I am very aware that the activity is part of an historical culture, as is the actual Coastline. Politicians endlessly talk about borders, the Sea defies all borders and boundaries. The activity of drawing and painting refuses clear cut categories, I am never sure where one form begins and ends, near goes into far, an edge is an invention, how to show movement and weather. The work creates its own forms through time, accident and obliteration, hopefully this process allows the original conception to find itself.

My work is mixed media and involves the use of collage and elements of printmaking, including a variety of materials such as graphite, plaster and paint.
I work on paper and wooden board, building up textured surfaces, adding and taking away elements until a point of resolution is reached.
I work intuitively, allowing an interplay between the conscious and the unconscious, the material and the metaphysical.
My work is essentially abstract, although it takes its inspiration from visual sources including the Suffolk coast, cityscapes and graffiti,
as well as poetry, classical music and jazz.
Bob Dawson
I have always been drawn to the sea with its sense of vast space, mystery and ever-changing colour, light and movement.
The sea is also a symbol of the subconscious and the realm of emotions. It is a place where one can be easily lost.
The boat represents a journey, a crossing, adventure and exploration.
My larger paintings depict boats abandoned at the end of their voyages but still clinging on, still afloat, bearing witness to their life histories, their
adventures and the trials they have endured. The two smaller paintings are inspired by the richness and mystery of the fantastical voyages one takes in one’s dreams.

These sea paintings come out of the memories I have from sailing holidays over thirty years. My wife and I sailed a boat from the east coast of the Uk to Kusadasi in Turkey, a discontinuous trip made over a period of several years. The many hours spent standing at the helm looking upon calm waters and still skies as well as dramatically strong winds and choppy waves has been etched on my psyche. These paintings capture a moment that anyone who has sailed a small boat would recognise; often the navigation on a long trip will take the vessel close to a headland, as the journey nears its destination. It is this situation of sailing round a headland, where the waves kick up, the wind changes direction, the current becomes confused, there maybe changes to the depth of the sea at these places, rocks to avoid that adds a feeling of danger.

Paradise Found: New Visions of the Blackdown Hills
18 March 2023 to 3 June 2023
Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Elmfield House, Dowell Street, Honiton, Devon, EX14 1LX
Here is my painting for the PARADISE FOUND. The painting is informed by two studies made of a nearby wood on the edge of the hills with glimpses of the surrounding landscape, and it is also about the memory of going to the location about a mile away from the original location of 'Plantation' painted by Robert Bevan. We spent the day and time leading up to that day looking at his painting and musing about his visits to the Blackdown Hills and a memorable feature on the day, carrying our easels and paints, was also the presence of a herd of cows whose field we had to walk through.
A SENSE OF PLACE: SURVIVAL
Curated by Philippa Beale
This is the last of three thematically linked exhibitions curated by Philippa Beale responding to the concept of A Sense of Place.
The challenge to the artists’ imagination in the 2020s is to profoundly question our values by asking how does humankind imagine its place on the planet? How can the artist evolve ways of living and working with ourselves and with nature?
This exhibition encompasses a diverse range of responses to the central idea, including distance, politics, and imagination. The exhibition at Bermondsey Project Space contains work by internationally celebrated artists studying why certain places hold special meaning for them.
Exhibition continues until 7 January 2023
Please note that the gallery will be closed between
23 December and 2 January 2023
