The method of making these collages came about quite unconsciously, I was feeling frustrated by my ability to develop compositions in the medium of ink on paper. Having kicked off with an ink drawing, I would begin with a figure against a background, and almost immediately felt the need to revise what was happening, the drawing lacked tension, the space became mundane, either the figure was active or the background worked at the expense of the narrative. Once I began to cut up the paper and reposition the large fragments I began to get a lively interplay of figure and background.
